The Heaviest 2020 SUVs

Fuel efficiency has been of increased focus for automakers in recent years. Making cars lighter and leaner with smaller engines has benefits when fueling up and for the environment.

But despite all the progress, some vehicles remain downright heavy. And this can be advantageous when it comes to safety for occupants, passenger capacity, and cargo room.

Below are the biggest and heaviest 2020 SUVs, which each vehicle listed in the headers weighing in at over 5,800 pounds.

gmc yukon denali

GMC Yukon Denali XL

When you think of large GM SUVs, the Cadillac Escalade may come to mind as the biggest but you’d be wrong. The 2020 GMC Yukon Denali XL, which is built on the same platform as the Escalade is heavier than its sibling.

The Yukon Denali XL has seating for 7 or 8, depending on the configuration. In top-end form with the largest wheels, the Denali XL weighs 6,100 pounds.

When you want more than 6,000 pounds or 3 tons of respect, the Yukon Denali XL is a sure bet. The good news is that it’s also less expensive than the Escalade with a starting price of about $70,000.

Cadillac Escalade ESV

The Escalade ESV is the second-largest and heaviest 2020 SUV on the roads. It comes standard with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine. With the largest wheels offered, the model comes in at 6,088 pounds.

The Escalade ESV’s fuel economy is rated at 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. Fortunately, the ESV has a massive 31-gallon fuel tank capacity, and on a full tank drivers an expect over to go over 600 miles in freeway driving. The Escalade ESV has a starting price of $78,195.

Rolls Royce Cullinan

The Cullinan is a full-size luxury SUV model, Rolls Royce’s first foray into the SUV market place. It sports a massive 6.8-liter twin-turbo V12 gas engine which brings it in at a portly 6,069 pounds.

The engine outputs 563 horsepower which gives it an impressive 0-60 acceleration time of 4.5 seconds, according to Car and Driver. Its fuel economy is rated at 12 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

The Cullinan is a luxurious, super SUV model that has a starting price of $325,000.

Lexus LX 570

Little has changed with the LX570 in over 5 years. This full-size luxury SUV remains a behemoth with seating capacity up to 8.

The model maintains its 5.7-liter V-8 engine which outputs 383 horsepower. The 2020 LX 570 has an atrocious fuel economy rating of 12 mpg city and 16 mpg highway. The vehicle carries up to 6,000 pounds of weight in its largest form.

Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia is built on the same assembly line as the Lexus LX 570. Not surprisingly, it’s equally large. It tows up to 7,400 pounds.

The Sequoia was first introduced in 2000, and not a whole lot has changed since them. It utilizes an outdated, inefficient V-8 engine with a six-speed automatic.

The Sequoia is the relative bargain of this heaviest 2020 SUV group with the Limited trim having a starting price of $58,990.

Lincoln Navigator

The Navigator is a long-running full-size luxury SUV. It has competed with the Escalade for over two decades. The 2020 Navigator weighs in at up to 5,922 pounds.

It has increased its fuel-efficiency over the years and now uses a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. The 2020 model has a rating of 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The Navigator can also tow up to 8,300 pounds depending on the trim line.

The 2020 Navigator has a starting price of $76,185.

Rivian R1S

The R1S is a forthcoming SUV model from the upstart electric automaker, Rivian, which is heavily backed by Ford. The R1S has four electric motors with a 400-mile range.

The R1S has tremendous acceleration with a claimed 0-60 time of 3 seconds, which would make it the fastest heavy SUV, and comparable in acceleration to super SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus.

Due to its size and battery packs, the RS1 has a vehicle weight of 5,842 pounds.

Other heavy 2020 SUVs with weights over 5,800 pounds include the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Chevrolet Suburban. The Ford Expedition and a fully loaded Lincoln Aviator are other large SUV models.

More Heavy SUVs on the Way?

We reviewed our list of heaviest 2015 SUVs, and surprisingly, not much has changed. There’s only so much automakers can do to slim down and reduce weight on full-size SUV models.

And interestingly, electric SUVs, which are on the rise, are quite heavy with their requisite large battery packs. The largest Tesla crossover, the Model X, weighs in at up to 5,531 pounds, and it’s only a midsize model.

If Tesla realizes the build of a full-size SUV model, perhaps based on its forthcoming Cybertruck platform, that model could really tip the scales. The Cybertruck, with a four-motor configuration, is expected to weigh in at about 6,500 pounds.

The good news is that electric SUVs utilize fewer resources and are more environmentally-friendly than large gas-powered models.
