Best and Worst 2022 SUV Brands

Consumer Reports (CR) has released its 2022 Annual Car Brand rankings. The rankings are based on CR member surveys that evaluated their overall scores for their vehicle models and included reliability, owner satisfaction, road tests, and safety.

While this survey focused more on automakers as a whole than specific models, the brands at the top tend to be more consistent across their vehicle lineup, including SUVs.

SUVs make up many of the models in the autoamakers lineups. A recent J.D. Power and Associates study found that 57.3% of vehicles purchased in the U.S. in 2021 were SUVs.

Japanese car brands finished best in the CR survey. Six of the top 10 models were from Japanese brands, up one spot from the 2021 survey.

In the survey, five of the top 10 brands were luxury SUV makers with BMW, Lexus, Audi, Porsche, and Infiniti finishing in the top 10.

There were no American or South Korean automakers in the top 10 highest-ranking car brands. Buick fell two spots dropping to 11th in this year’s survey. Chrysler dropped five spots from 8th place to 13th place in the 2022 survey. Dodge also dropped, falling two spots from 14th to 16th place.

Hyundai also dropped out of the top 10 for 2022, falling four spots to 14th place. This is still in the top half of car brands in the survey.

The Top 3 SUV Brands

Subaru. Subaru climbed two spots from 2021 to take the top spot among car brands. The company currently has four SUV models that make up the vast majority of their U.S. car sales.

Subaru SUV models are currently the subcompact Crosstrek, the compact Forester, the midsize Outback, and the three-row Ascent.

Mazda. Mazda lost its crown from 2021 as the top-ranked car brand falling one spot. The majority of its U.S. sales are its SUV models with more new models on the way.

For 2022, Mazda offers the subcompact CX-30, the compact CX-5, and the three-row CX-9 crossovers. Mazda dropped the smaller CX-3 crossover from their lineup. However, new Mazda SUV models are forthcoming including the CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90.

Mazda has scored consistently well in recent CR surveys. In 2021, Mazda was found to be the most reliable car brand in its annual vehicle reliability survey.

BMW X5 white

BMW. BMW was the highest-ranked luxury brand in the CR survey. They also dropped one spot from the 2021 survey.

For 2022, BMW offer seven SUVs in their lineup including the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, and the three-row X7. The all-new, all-electric BMW iX debuts for the 2023 model year.

Worst SUV Brands

Among the 32 car brands ranked, the top 10 worst were from a myriad of different automakers and vehicle types. It included five American automakers with one luxury brand, Lincoln. There were four European automakers and one Asian car brand in the bottom 10.

Mitsubishi was the lone Asian and Japanese automaker in the top 10 worst car brands. Their SUV models are the Outlander, Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport, and Eclipse Cross.

While every vehicle owner’s experience is unique, the findings show overall results for automakers. Low rankings also tend to correlate with lower resale value.

However, certain types of vehicles such as the Jeep Wrangler are an exception. The Wrangler, which is an off-road oriented vehicle, has historically been shown to have a fantastic resale value.

Worst SUV Findings

Jeep took the bottom spot in the car brands survey. They dropped three spots from 2021 to take the crown as the worst car brand.

Jeep’s model lineup consists entirely of SUVs other than the Gladiator. For 2022, the company introduced the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV models.

The other Jeep SUV models are the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and of course, the Wrangler.

The only good takeaway from the survey for Jeep SUV owners is that the Gladiator was the model that dragged the company further down.

Alfa Romeo was spared the ignominy of repeating as the worst car brand in the survey as it was in 2021. The company rose four spots to finish 28th of the 32 car brands ranked.

Tesla rounded out the top 10 worst automakers in the survey. It was in the bottom third of brands. CR members were not a fan of the company’s yoke steering wheel and other vehicle shortcomings.
