Tiger Woods’ SUV in His 2021 Car Accident

The 2021 Genesis GV80 was the car Tiger Woods was driving when he was involved in a serious single-car accident near Ranchos Palos Verdes, California on February 23, 2021.

The GV80 Tiger was driving had Genesis Invitational signage on the front doors. Genesis likely furnished the vehicle to the golfer as the previous week, he’d hosted the Genesis Invitational golf tournament in LA.

The accident occurred on a perilous, curvy road where fatality accidents have previously occurred. Tiger lost control of his GV80, hit a raised median, rolled the vehicle, and went off the road, over an embankment. The vehicle sustained major damage.

Fortunately, Tiger survived the accident, escaping with significant right leg and ankle injuries. The injuries required surgery and an extended hospital stay. There were no passengers in Tiger’s vehicle.

Tiger’s survival was in part due to the advanced safety features in the GV80, which is one of the safest SUVs on the road. Keep reading to learn more about the GV80s safety ratings.

Engines & Fuel Economy

The GV80 is offered with two gas engines. The standard is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that outputs an impressive 300 horsepower. Models with this engine are referred to as the 2.5T.

The other engine is a more powerful twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 that outputs 375 horsepower. Models with the V-6 engine are referred to as the 3.5T. Based on Car and Driver testing, the 2.5T has a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds, while the 3.5T was timed at 5.3 seconds.

With either engine, rear-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option. There are no hybrid or diesel engine options for the 2021 GV80. A hybrid variant may be on its way in the coming years.

The 2.5T AWD has a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The 3.5T AWD has a fuel economy rating of 18 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.

A Safe Luxury Midsize SUV

The GV80, which has ten airbags, received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award.

Check out how the GV80 fared in the hard-to-pass small crash test in the video below. The IIHS test showed that the driver’s space was well maintained with low injury risk.

With regards to Tiger Woods’ accident, the GV80’s crash integrity, airbags, and Tiger’s seat belt use helped save his life.

Raising the Bar

The Genesis GV80 is a compelling offering in the luxury three-row crossover class. It raises the bar, delivering more value than European automaker offerings while delivering better performance than its Japanese and American automaker counterparts.

One negative for the GV80 is that its third-row of seats is cramped. It’s better suited for small children than adults. Thus, unless a third row is a must, you’re better off going with a two-row model.

Nonetheless, the GV80 is a highly desirable vehicle that is tops in safety and luxurious and upscale in appearance inside and out.
