Satisfying the “need for speed” in an SUV doesn’t mean that you need to spend a fortune on a crossover. Some of the fastest SUVs are less than half of six figures delivering the perks you’d expect in such a vehicle, as well as speed that is meant to impress.
Why settle for a cramped two-seat sports car when you can have the passenger room and versatility of an SUV without compromising too much on performance? The following are five of the fastest SUVs you’ll find today under $50,000.
Subaru Forester XT
If you’re looking for a vehicle that will take you to work and anywhere you want to play after work, and get there quickly, the Subaru Forester XT has a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds. This turbocharged 2.0-liter 250 horsepower four-cylinder crossover is a lot faster than the Forester 2.5i – and it also has off-road capability, making it a versatile option for those who crave speed both on and off the road.
The Forester XT was previously featured in our fastest SUVs under $30,000 article, but with options, it can easily top $35,000 as a 2017 model.
The Jaguar F-Pace, a new crossover model, zooms from 0-60 at a speedy 5.4 seconds with its 340 horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine. That – along with its superior body control and steering – means that it’s an excellent luxury crossover choice for those with a $50,000 budget. If you require a supercharged vehicle, opt for the F-Pace S and its extra 40 horsepower will get you there in 5.1 seconds.
This SUV’s largely aluminum structure also makes it ultra-light, in addition to being ultra-fast. Don’t be fooled by it being a crossover. The F-Pace is a really quick, athletic cat.
Ford Explorer Sport
You won’t feel sluggish on the road when you’re in a Ford Explorer Sport. With a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine generating 365 horsepower, the Explorer Sport offers a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds. This model also features a high-quality ride, excellent safety features, and competitive mileage. All of that amounts to an SUV that is fast, safe, and practical value for anyone in the market for a sporty sub $50,000 crossover.
The Porsche Macan is an appealing blend of sports utility vehicle and high-status sports car. The smaller sibling of the more powerful Porsche Cayenne, you’ll feel like you’re practically flying when you go from 0-60 in 6.3 seconds in its 2.0-liter turbocharged 252 horspower 2.0-liter engine.
Opt for the much more potent and more expensive 340 horspepower twin turbo V6 Macan S, and you’ll get from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds in this glorious luxurious sporty crossover.
The revised GLC class has a starting price of about $41,000 and it delivers, having won the 2017 Motor Trend SUV of the Year Award. The GLC300 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower. Its 0-60 time has been tested at 6.8 seconds.
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
If you’ve been contemplating the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, you get a nice blend of luxury and responsiveness in this smaller luxury British crossover. Its 2.0-liter 240 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a bit pokey at 0-60 time of 8.1 seconds, but still competitive in its class. This is a highly stylish vehicle with options of three or five doors. The fuel economy is relatively decent, too.
Choosing the Fastest SUV Under $50,000
In comparing these models, the F-Pace and GLC300 are strong choices in this group. However, both of these models have options that can escalate the price quickly. In the case of the GLC300 4Matic, the vehicle can come in at over $60,000 with options. For the more budget conscious, consider the Forester XT.
Whichever you choose, you don’t have to compromise the need for speed just to drive a vehicle that’s also practical. Today’s SUVs have much to offer – and many of them feature 0-60 times that even the most dedicated sports car enthusiasts can appreciate. For those with a higher budget, check out the Range Rover Sport, Audi SQ5 with its 354 horsepower, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 or Mercedes-Benz AMG lines.
