Best Resale Value SUV

Kelly Blue Book (“KBB”) has given out its annual Best Resale Value Awards for 2011 models. The award recognizes vehicles that according to KBB projections, best maintain their market value after five years of ownership. Impressively, eight of the top ten models on the list are SUVs. According to KBB, the best resale value SUV for 2011 is the BMW X5.

BMWs hold their value very well. The X5 was the number two-ranked vehicle overall, behind the Audi A5, a sleek, stylish coupe model that Audi debuted in 2008. KBB recognized BMW as the best overall luxury brand for resale value. Subaru was recognized as the overall 2011 best brand for resale.

According to Kelly KBB, the top 8 best resale value SUVs for 2011 are:

1. BMW X5 (Best Resale Value: Luxury Utility Vehicle)
2. BMW X6
3. Honda CR-V (Best Resale Value: Mid-Size Utility Vehicle)
4. Jeep Wrangler
5. Lexus GX
6. Lexus RX
7. Toyota FJ Cruiser (Best Resale Value: Mid-Size Utility Vehicle)
8. Subaru Outback

These awards show that the new 2011 BMW X3 and upcoming BMW X1 compact SUV have a good chance of also having strong resale values. The Honda CR-V was the best resale value SUV costing less than $30,000. KBB wrote that the CR-V is “…everything a smart shopper might want in a vehicle…”. Also making the top ten was the Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck. The Toyota 4-Runner has much in common with the Tacoma.

While not making the overall top 10 best vehicles, the GMC Acadia was awarded the best resale value among full-size utility vehicles. KBB noted its ride, handling, and efficiency with the capability to seat eight. KBB also liked the Acadia’s corporate siblings: the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse. The Honda Pilot won the award for this class in 2010.

For the hybrid/alternative energy utility vehicle class, KBB gave its award to the BMX xDrive35d. The 2011 diesel-powered version of this luxury SUV model produces 265 horsepower and a mighty 425 lb-ft of torque while still returning EPA-estimated fuel economy of 19-mpg city and 26-mpg highway. This model won this same award last year.

Resale value is an important factor to consider when purchasing an SUV. Purchasing a best resale SUV makes good financial sense. It will get you a higher price when you go to sell or trade it in leaving you more in savings or for your new car purchase.
