Luxury SUVs have become the largest class in the segment. While there is some overlap in the categories between mid-size, full-size, and luxury SUVs, there are about 50 luxury SUV models to choose from. Vehicle makers competing in the segment include: Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Saab, and Volvo. Many of these models have cutting edge technology both inside and outside the cabin. Prices in this segment range from about $40,000 to over $100,000.
Luxury SUV models offer either a V-6 or V-8 engine, with several models offering engines with more than 400 horsepower. While ample power is attractive, several makers offer more fuel-efficient engine choices. BMW, Cadillac, Lexus, and Mercedes offer hybrid models while Mercedes also offers a diesel engine it its R350 model. Luxury SUVs typically have third row seating available but some models offer only a five-passenger configuration.
Luxury SUVs can be derived from a company’s full-size SUV platform or be built separately. For example, the Cadillac Escalade is based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Suburban. Also, the luxurious Infiniti QX56 is derived from the same platform as the Nissan Pathfinder Armada.
A new trend in the luxury segment are models that combine an SUV structure with a coupe design such as the all new Acura ZDX and BMW X6. These models combine handsome coupe-like styling with the functionality and versatility of an SUV.
If you want luxury while still having versatility, cabin space, and good cargo room, the luxury SUV class has a tremendous range of vehicle offerings.
