When you think of full-size SUVs, hefty is one word that springs to mind. But some full-size and large luxury SUVs have more mass than others. We look at the five heaviest SUV models of 2015 where the average weight is nearly 5,800 pounds.
1. Lexus LX 570 – 6,000 pounds
It’s ironic that the heaviest 2015 SUV comes from an automaker that is known for fuel efficient engines, Toyota. The Lexus LX 570 weighs 6,000 pounds, the only 2015 SUV model to reach this level.
This luxurious large SUV features an antiquated 5.7-liter V8 engine and offers a host of interior features which add to its weight. Toyota, which owns Lexus also utilizes this engine in the Toyota Tundra pickup truck and two other models on this list.
2. Lincoln Navigator – 5,830 pounds
In the 2005 movie Are We There Yet?, actor Ice Cube describes his Navigator as “6,000 pounds of respect”. The model may have shed a few pounds over the years but the Navigator has been one hefty SUV for nearly two decades.
With it’s new EcoBoost V6 engine, the only six-cylinder engine offered in the full-size class, the Navigator still makes a big impact at 5,830. It’s surprising actually gained weight from the prior year as the 2014 model with the 5.3-liter V8 weighed in at 5,794 pounds.
3. Toyota Land Cruiser – 5,765 pounds
The Land Cruiser, a large luxurious SUV from Toyota shares, the same platform and engine as the Lexus LX 570 so it’s not a surprise to see in this spot. Like all the models that are among the heaviest SUVs, the Land Cruisers uses a traditional body-on-frame construction.
4. Toyota Sequoia – 5,730 pounds
The full-size Sequoia also sports the 5.7- liter “i-force” V8 engine, which it has used since 2008. The weight and age of this engine also hinders the model at the pump with a fuel economy rating of 13-mpg city and 17-mpg highway, which is below average for its class.
5. Infiniti QX80 – 5,633 pounds
The QX80, a full-size luxury SUV, utilizes a 5.6-liter engine that has essentially been utilized by Nissan/Infiniti for over a decade. With all it’s luxury accoutrements, the QX80 tips the scales at more than 250 pounds heavier than its simpler sibling, the Nissan Armada. Adding options to the above models can add several hundred more pounds to their weight./p>
Other Heavy SUV models
The Cadillac Escalade is synonymous with big SUVs but the 2015 Escalade, with a 6.2-liter V8 engine, is a bit of a lightweight at 5,594 pounds. Mercedes’ G-Class, a large luxurious go-anywhere SUV with a starting price of $116,000, weighs in at 5,578 pounds. The largest SUV of them all in terms of length, the Chevrolet Suburban tips the scales at 5,546, which was just behind the Ford Expedition’s 5,549 curb weight.
These figures pail in comparison to the weight of SUVs in the past decade. Discontinued models such as the 2015 Ford Excursion weighed in at 6,605 pounds while the Hummer H1 (Hummer went out of business in 2009) weighed in at a massive 7,847 pounds.
Thoughts & Takeaways
While engineering and building innovations are finding ways to make the full-size SUV models lighter, new safety features, options, and the public’s preference to have more space and plenty of power make bringing down the weight of SUVs remains a challenge.
While drivers and passengers feel safer with the mass that full-size and large luxury SUVs provide, it doesn’t mean the roads are safer with large SUVs. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report showed that making the heaviest SUVs and pickups lighter would lower overall traffic fatalities.
