2012 Compact SUVs

For people who are looking for more cargo room than a car can offer, but don’t want to sacrifice the maneuverability and suffer the poor fuel economy and high price in full-sized SUVs, there are a number of 2012 compact SUVs to choose from. Here’s a closer look at a few of the standout models from the 2012 class.

Most Popular New Model

Compared to previous years, there were not very many new models released. Of the newly available models, the luxurious Range Rover Land Rover Evoque is getting the most attention. The model won the 2012 SUV of the Year award from Motor Trend.

The Evoque is not considered to be the most practical compact SUV on the market, however it is definitely one of the most stylish while still maintaining the off-road ability that Land Rover is known for.

Models That Feature Major Revisions

It seems like every year, there are a handful of compact SUVs that undergo major renovation. In 2012, the Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Tiguan presents the most notable changes. The CR-V has been around since 1997 and enters its third generation in 20012 with a host of changes. The Volkswagen Tiguan has modified its styling to more closer resemble its big brother the Touareg and is more fuel efficient.

2012 Compact SUVs With the Best Cargo Room

The compact SUVs with the most cargo room consistently vary from year to year, however the top few are always within several cubic feet of each other. Over the past several years, some of the most spacious options include the Toyota RAV4, Mitsubishi Outlander, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester. At the high end of the spectrum, you will be able to find 73+ cubic feet of cargo space with seats either folded down or removed.

If you are looking more for sport over utility, consider such models as the Mini Cooper Countryman and Nissan Juke. These are the small SUVs of 2012 as compact hatchback models offer more cargo room than these two models.

Top Fuel Economy Models

With compact SUVs, the fuel economy can vary greatly. If you are looking for the best fuel economy, then the Ford escape hybrid will be at the top of your list. It features 34 miles per gallon in the city, which is more than 10 miles per gallon better than the next closest competitor.

The highway mileage for many of the top compact SUVs will be in the low 30s. Other options such as the Jeep Compass and Mitsubishi Outlander offer reasonable fuel efficiency as well.

Budget Friendly Models

The two most budget friendly 2012 compact SUVs will be the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. They are both under $20,000. The Kia Sportage is considered by many to be more fun to drive than other compact SUVs and offers a number of premium features. The Hyundai Tucson is smaller than most compact SUVs, however its sporty handling, classy design, and strong overall value drive its rise in popularity.

The Chevrolet Equinox is a little more expensive, however, its overall value in terms of additional features and space, make it a solid choice as well. Whichever model you choose, be sure to look at overall vehicle ownership costs including fuel economy, maintenance, and insurance rates.
